Did the galaxy NGC 4319 ΓÇ£ejectΓÇ¥ the quasar Markarian 205 (the smaller object in the image)? The two galaxies certainly appear to be connected. And a more detailed view seems to confirm a connec- tion. So why are most astron- omers convinced that the apparent connection is just a coincidence of alignment?
NGC 4319 is about 60 million light years from Earth. Markarian 205, however, has a redshift of 0.07, which would place it almost a billion light years from NGC 4319. So vast a distance between the two would make any connection impossible. A few astronomers dispute that the objects are unrelated, claiming instead that the quasar is some type of exotic object recently ejected from NGC 4319.
